Pine, what kind of wood is it? Pine is an incredibly popular choice of wood used in manufacturing and furniture production especially. As one of the most common timbers grown in the Northern Hemisphere is it readily available and therefore comes fairly cheaply. Pine skirting has a lot of advantages, one of which being that it is very easy to adapt. The wood can be painted or finished with various lacquers and varnishes, making it a great product to use in the home as it can be personalised to suit almost any interior environment. Some people have used Oak lacquers on Pine wood to change it's appearance and save money. Pine timber is used by homeowners and construction profesionals alike and is the go-to choice of solid wood skirting for a lot of people. As it is a softwood, it is more lightweight than hardwoods like Oak and is therefore more vulnerable to damages, however with some care and attention Pine can fulfill all the functions that good skirting boards should be able to. We have a large range of profiles available, all of which can be applied to Pine skirting. Only our most popular profiles are available online, you can view our extended range here. The Skirting Board - Let us briefly cover its history ![]() Like all other varieties of skirting boards, the main purpose of Pine skirting boards is to cover the gap where the floor meets the wall, which can sometimes be uneven and messy. They also offer a barrier of protection for your walls as furniture that is close to the wall can often damage wallpaper. Skirting Boards are a feature of almost everyone's home and have been since the Victorian period, making them a stable of interior decoration and construction. As well as their functional values like protecting walls, covering gaps and preventing water damage, skirting boards are often used purely as a design feature. Advanced tools and more skilled professionals have meant that gaps between floors and walls are slightly less common, however skirting has been a necessity for so long that a room might look strange without it in place! Although we have a large range of profiles available here at Knowles, we are constantly creating new designs for bespoke customers. Our profile range continues to grow and we are confident that we can make tooling to match almost any order.
