What is MDF?
E & S W Knowles only sell moisture resistant MDF which adds to the versatility, durability and overall quality of the product. Being moisture resistant means that our MDF skirting boards would be suitable for any room including kitchens and bathrooms where moisture is more likely to occur.
MDF has become one of the most popular materials for skirting boards due to its practicality and relatively low price. Homeowners and construction companies alike will use it for exactly those reasons. It is a man-made material created by mixing fibres from real wood sources with glues and resins. It is then heated up and pressed to produce what you see as MDF.
Pressing MDF in this way gives it a hard and almost completely flat surface. This is ideal for painting, making it easy to customize to suit your chosen style.
Any profile/moulding in our extensive range can be applied to MDF skirting as its properties make it easy to cut and shape. View our range here.
The Skirting Board - Let us briefly cover its history
MDF skirting boards are used to cover the base of interior walls. Their purpose is to hide uneven areas or even gaps where the floor meets the wall. Skirting boards became popular in the Victorian era and have been ever-present in people's homes ever since as a feature that may sometimes go unnoticed, yet holds great importance.
Skirting can be made to be aesthetically pleasing, with a number of elaborate designs available that can really stand out like a Georgian profile. Alternatively, they can simply be used for their more functional values, employing a subtle design such as a Bullnose profile. MDF skirting boards form a barrier that protects walls from furniture damage, boot marks and various other impact marks. As technology progresses, designers are constantly creating new and elaborate styles of skirting. Our profile range continues to grow with each bespoke order, giving us the confidence that we can fulfil almost any request.
