How do you clean skirting boards?

Skirting boards can be a bit of a dust magnet at times and may well be subject to scuffs and knocks which will leave marks. Understanding how to clean skirting board effectively (and without as much effort as you might think) can be cheap and a really quick job. Scuffs and marks on walls and skirting boards can really affect the look and style of your home.

Part of a skirting boards purpose is, of course, to protect the walls from damage, so naturally getting bumped is part of their job description! Like most other pieces of furniture, skirting boards need a bit of TLC every now and again. Here are a few tips on "How to clean skirting boards properly" to help keep them looking brand new for longer:

  1. Wipe the skirting boards down with a soft cloth to remove any dust.
  2. After dusting, any light marks left on your skirting board can be cleaned with a simple solution of warm water with a bit of washing up liquid in; not too much though and make sure the sponge you use is ringed out, not all paints respond well to getting wet.

Remember that our MDF skirting boards are moisture resistant as standard so don’t worry about damaging the boards themselves, just be aware of how your surface finish will react with water and cleaning products.

Once you have wiped the skirting boards;

  1. Go over the boards again with a clean damp cloth to remove any soap from the skirting as it can attract dust.
  2. If the marks are really stubborn (pen, crayon, scuff marks) you might want to try a stronger solution of warm water with a bit of vinegar at this time. This won’t leave the nicest smell behind so go over it with the soap solution again afterward.
  3. You can then either leave to dry naturally or pat dry with a dry cloth or some paper towels.

Everyone will have their own little tricks or methods (including white vinegar, washing up liquid and even toothpaste!) so find out what works best for you, as long as it doesn’t damage your paintwork then all is good! Some people just use the brush attachment of their vacuum cleaner, whereas some may choose to use an all-purpose spray and a cloth to wipe down the surface. Throwaway cleaning wipes or even baby wipes could work as well!
